The short version
Pro is worth it if
You use more than 3 Pro Searches a day or more than 1 Research report a month, which is where the free plan stops. Pro also adds the choice of models such as GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5, file analysis and image generation.
Pro is not worth it if
Your questions are short lookups, because basic search on the free plan has no practical limit. Pro is also the wrong purchase for developers. A Pro subscription includes no API use, and the API's cheapest setting costs about $0.0014 to $0.0018 a question, so US$17 buys roughly 9,400 to 12,100 of them.
What is Perplexity Pro?
Perplexity Pro is the paid individual plan of Perplexity, an AI answer engine that searches the web and cites a source for each claim. The free plan gives the same kind of cited answer, but it runs on basic models and allows only a few of the deeper Pro Searches.
Pro raises the limits on Pro Search, Research reports, file uploads and file and app creation. It lets you choose the model for each search, and it adds image and video generation and premium data sources such as PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ. Pro also includes Perplexity Computer, an agent that does multi-step work, with 4,000 bonus credits and some weekly usage included.
Pro Search is not a setting you switch on. When a question needs several steps, Perplexity applies Pro Search automatically until you reach your plan's limit.
Perplexity Pro vs free vs Max
Perplexity has three individual plans and a discounted Education Pro plan. The pricing page shows Pro and Max only at their annual rates. On 30 October 2026 it listed no monthly-billing price for Pro. The Max help page gives both: $200 a month or $2,000 a year.
| Free | Pro | Max | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | US$17 a month, billed annually | US$167 a month billed annually ($2,000 a year), or $200 monthly |
| Basic searches | Practically unlimited | Practically unlimited | Practically unlimited |
| Pro Searches | 3 a day | Weekly limit, sized for average use | Weekly limit, sized for advanced use |
| Research reports | 1 a month | Monthly limit, average use | Monthly limit, advanced use |
| Choose the model | No, Perplexity picks a basic model | Yes, 7 advanced models | Yes, 11 advanced models |
| Image generation | No | Yes | Yes |
| Comet Assistant (browser agent) | No | Monthly limit, average use | Monthly limit, advanced use |
| Computer credits | None | 4,000 bonus credits, plus weekly included usage | 10,000 a month, plus 35,000 bonus credits |
| AI training on your data | Standard terms | You can opt out | You can opt out |
| Support | Basic | Priority | Dedicated |
Education Pro costs $10 a month for students and educators verified through SheerID, and it includes the Pro features. Enterprise Pro starts at $40 a month or $400 a year per seat, and Perplexity never uses Enterprise data for model training.
Which models Pro includes
Perplexity's model list for Search, dated 27 October 2026, gives Pro seven models: GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.7 and Nemotron 3.5 Super VL. Max adds four more: GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1. Model Council, which asks several models at once, is available only on Max. Perplexity says the list changes as providers release and retire models.
Perplexity Pro usage limits
Perplexity does not publish numbers for Pro or Max. Its plan table describes Pro's limits only as weekly or monthly limits sized for "average use", and Max's limits as sized for "advanced use". The Pro help page adds that access to advanced models may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage.
The only published numbers are for the Enterprise plans, not for Pro:
| Feature | Enterprise Pro | Enterprise Max |
|---|---|---|
| Pro Searches | 400 a week | 4,000 a week |
| Research reports | 50 a month | 500 a month |
| Comet Assistant queries | 80 a month | 800 a month |
| File and app creation | 50 a month | 500 a month |
| File upload sessions | 100 a week | 1,000 a week |
Perplexity Computer has its own budget in credits. 100 credits cost $1, and a quick fact or definition uses about 15 to 70 credits. Pro's 4,000 bonus credits are therefore worth $40, and Max's 10,000 monthly credits are worth $100 a month. When the included usage runs out, you buy more credits.
Is Perplexity Max worth it?
On annual billing, Max costs US$167 a month and Pro costs US$17, a difference of US$150. Max adds the four extra models, Model Council, higher limits, $100 of Computer credits a month and early access to new products. The $100 of credits covers two thirds of the price difference. If Computer credits are the only limit you reach on Pro, buying extra credits costs less than Max. Max is for people who reach Pro's Research limits every week.
Paying per question: the Perplexity API
The API is billed separately from the apps, and neither Pro nor Max includes any API use. You buy credits in the API console, and some new accounts receive a one-time $10 signup credit that expires after 60 days.
Many pricing guides still quote Sonar prices for Perplexity's API. Support for Sonar Chat Completions ended on 27 September 2026. Perplexity is moving Sonar requests to its Agent API model by model. In the Agent API you choose an effort level instead of a model. Each effort level bundles a model, a search setup and a step limit. The fast level, for example, runs one Fast Search at $0.001 and answers with gpt-6-luna.
Perplexity published the cost per request of each effort level on two research benchmarks:
| Effort level | Replaces | Cost per request | Requests for US$17 |
|---|---|---|---|
fast | Sonar, Sonar Pro | $0.0014–0.0018 | 9,400–12,100 |
low | Sonar Reasoning Pro | $0.006–0.012 | 1,400–2,800 |
medium | — | $0.016–0.031 | 550–1,060 |
high | Sonar Deep Research | $0.121–0.136 | 125–140 |
The two numbers in each range come from Perplexity's two benchmarks, BrowseComp and DeepSearchQA. Both use hard research questions, so everyday questions may cost less. A completed API response can report its own cost in usage.cost.total_cost.
A person who asks 30 questions a day at the fast level pays about $1.30 to $1.60 a month. Even 30 deep research reports a month at the high level cost about $3.60 to $4.10.
The API does not replace the app, though. It has no chat window, history, file uploads or phone apps. You either write code against it or connect it to an AI assistant that you already use. For the assistant route, Perplexity's MCP server has three tools: perplexity_ask, perplexity_reason and perplexity_research, which call the fast, medium and high effort levels.
Self-hosting an open-source answer engine
Fireplexity is an open-source answer engine that you run yourself. For each question it searches and scrapes pages through Firecrawl, then writes an answer with a model on Groq. Our self-hosting guide priced one question at about 10 to 16 Firecrawl credits plus a tenth of a cent of Groq inference.
The cost depends on the plan you buy, because Firecrawl sells credits in monthly plans and not one by one. The plan prices below are the ones the self-hosting guide checked on 8 October 2026:
- Free: 1,000 Firecrawl credits a month, which is 60 to 100 questions. Groq's free tier allowed 40 to 60 answers a day in our Groq test, so Firecrawl's limit is reached first.
- Hobby, $19 a month: 5,000 credits, or about 310 to 500 questions.
- Standard, $99 a month: 100,000 credits, or about 6,250 to 10,000 questions.
For one person, self-hosting is cheaper than Pro only inside the free plan. The first paid Firecrawl plan already costs more than Pro. You also get a smaller product: Fireplexity has no accounts, apps or Deep Research, and it answers from a few scraped pages. Our Fireplexity vs Perplexity comparison lists what it lacks.
Vane, another open-source answer engine, can run on your own computer with a local model and no cost per question. It needs about 16 GB of memory for the model, and in its default modes it answers from search snippets rather than full pages. The reason to self-host is control over your queries and sources, not the price.
Break-even by usage level
The table below puts the four options side by side, with two API effort levels, for one person at five levels of use. The API columns use the per-request costs from Perplexity's benchmarks. The Fireplexity column uses the cheapest Firecrawl plan that covers the questions, plus Groq where its free tier is not enough, and leaves out hosting.
| Questions a month | Free plan | Pro | API, fast | API, low | Fireplexity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 (2 a day) | $0 | $17 | $0.08–0.11 | $0.36–0.72 | $0 |
| 300 (10 a day) | $0, but only 3 Pro Searches a day | $17 | $0.42–0.54 | $1.80–3.60 | $19 |
| 900 (30 a day) | $0, but only 3 Pro Searches a day | $17 | $1.26–1.62 | $5.40–10.80 | $99 |
| 3,000 (100 a day) | $0, but only 3 Pro Searches a day | $17, if within Pro's unpublished weekly limit | $4.20–5.40 | $18–36 | about $101–103 |
| 30 deep research reports | 1 report allowed | $17, if within Pro's unpublished monthly limit | high: $3.63–4.08 | No Deep Research | |
The break-even table shows three things:
- Free plan vs Pro: the free plan costs nothing until you need a fourth Pro Search in a day, a second Research report in a month, a model of your choice or image generation.
- API vs Pro: the API costs less than Pro below about 9,400 questions a month at
fast, 1,400 atlowand 125 reports athigh, if you can work without the app. - Fireplexity vs Pro: self-hosting costs nothing up to 60 to 100 questions a month. Above that, the first paid Firecrawl plan costs $19, which is more than Pro.
Who should pay for Pro, and who should not
Pay for Pro if you…
- Hit the free plan's 3 Pro Searches a day most days.
- Want to pick between models such as GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Gemini 3.8 Flash.
- Need more than one Research report a month, file analysis or image generation.
- Want the apps, history and Perplexity Computer, not code to maintain.
Do not pay if you…
- Ask short factual questions, which the free plan answers without a practical limit.
- Need answers inside your own software. Use the API instead, at a fraction of a cent per question.
- Need your queries to stay on your own servers. Self-host instead, for control rather than savings.
- Use Perplexity now and then. The free plan includes 1 Research report a month.
Max makes sense when you reach Pro's Research limits every week. A team that needs shared Projects, admin controls and no training on its data should compare Enterprise Pro at $40 a seat. Our guide to checking AI search citations shows how to check the sources behind any answer in about a minute.
Common questions
Is Perplexity Pro worth it?
It is worth it if you need more than 3 Pro Searches a day or more than 1 Research report a month, which is where the free plan stops. It also adds a choice of models, file analysis and image generation for US$17 a month billed annually. For short factual questions, the free plan is enough.
What is Perplexity Pro?
Perplexity Pro is the paid individual plan of the Perplexity answer engine. It raises the limits on Pro Search, Research reports and file uploads, lets you choose between seven advanced models, and adds image generation and Perplexity Computer.
What is the difference between Perplexity free and Pro?
The free plan allows practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research report a month, and Perplexity picks a basic model for you. Pro raises the Pro Search and Research limits, lets you choose models such as GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5, and adds image generation and priority support.
What are the Perplexity Pro limits?
Perplexity does not publish them. Its plan table describes Pro's Pro Search limit as weekly and its Research limit as monthly, both sized for average use. Access to advanced models may also be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage.
Does Perplexity Pro include API access?
No. The API is billed separately, and Pro and Max include no API use. At the Agent API's fast effort level, one request costs about $0.0014 to $0.0018 in Perplexity's own benchmarks.
